Addition threads on Reddit, like r/TorontoRealEstate: “What does an average addition cost in Toronto?”, follow a pattern: someone posts a quote they received, the replies split between “that is robbery” and “that is just what additions cost now,” and someone suggests moving instead. The recurring surprise is that an addition costs more per square foot than the house itself did.
That surprise is legitimate. You are building a complete small house, foundation to roof, and then surgically attaching it to an existing one. The tie-in work is what most online estimates, Reddit or otherwise, leave out.
